The Shahidlar Monument, located within the sacred grounds of Shahidlar Khiyabani (the Alley of Martyrs), is a place of deep national significance and solemn reflection for the people of Azerbaijan. The Eternal Flame Memorial Pavilion
Walking along the quiet, cypress-lined avenue leads visitors to the striking Eternal Flame memorial pavilion at the end of the walkway. Built in 1996, the pavilion is an elegant dome-shaped structure constructed of red marble, featuring intricately carved arches inspired by classic Islamic architecture. Underneath the dome, the Eternal Flame burns continuously, honoring the memory of the fallen. The pavilion serves as the primary location for state ceremonies and is visited by foreign dignitaries and heads of state during official visits to Azerbaijan.
The black marble tombstones that line the path contain the portraits and names of the martyrs, reflecting a deeply personal look at the human cost of the nation's independence. The atmosphere remains peaceful and respectful, offering visitors a quiet escape from the bustling city below, while serving as a powerful educational site on the modern history of the country.
Panoramic Views & Driving Guide
In addition to its historical importance, the Shahidlar Monument offers some of the most spectacular panoramic viewpoints of Baku. From the observation decks next to the pavilion, visitors can view the crescent-shaped Baku Bay, the busy seaside Boulevard, and the Flame Towers, which rise dramatically directly behind the memorial park. The contrast between ancient remembrance and ultra-modern architecture is particularly striking here.
Reaching Highland Park and the Shahidlar Monument by car is highly convenient. The site is well-connected by wide avenues, and there is a public parking lot near the entrance to the park on Mehdi Huseyn Street, right next to the parliament building. Navigating to the hill in a rental car allows you to easily combine this visit with a scenic drive along the Baku Boulevard or a visit to the nearby Old City.
