The Mysterious Sentinel of Baku

The Maiden Tower (known locally as Giz Galasi) is the most iconic, recognizable, and enigmatic symbol of Baku's historical heritage. Rising 29 meters at the southeastern edge of Baku's ancient Icheri Sheher (Old City), this UNESCO World Heritage monument is shrouded in mystery. Historians and archaeologists continue to debate its exact age and original purpose; suggestions range from a defensive bastion built in the 12th century by architect Masud ibn Davud, to a much older Zoroastrian fire temple or astronomical observatory dating back to the 6th or 7th century BC.

Unique Architecture and Legendary Lore

The tower's architecture is unique in the South Caucasus. Constructed from local limestone, it features a massive cylindrical tower paired with a solid, sail-like stone projection (buttress) pointing toward the Caspian Sea. The walls at the base are exceptionally thick—up to 5 meters—tapering to 4 meters at the top. Inside, the tower is divided into eight levels, each connected by stone stairs built into the thick walls. A deep, ancient water well is located on the third level, hinting at its design as a self-sufficient fortress capable of surviving long military sieges.

The name "Maiden Tower" has inspired several romantic and tragic legends. The most famous tells of a young princess whose father, the king, wished to marry her off against her will. She requested that a tower be built for her first, and upon its completion, she leaped from the top into the Caspian Sea, which at the time washed directly against the base of the tower. Many local stories and poems commemorate this legend of defiance and freedom.

Visitor Views & Travel Logistics

Today, the interior of the Maiden Tower serves as a modern museum showcasing the historical evolution of Baku. The rooftop observation deck is the highlight of the visit, offering sweeping views of Baku Bay, the ancient cobblestone roofs of the Old City, the seaside Boulevard, and the modern Flame Towers rising in the distance.

For those driving a rental car, the tower is easily reached by navigating toward Neftchilar Avenue. You can park in the underground parking facility near Fountain Square, or along Kichik Qala Street, which loops around the Old City wall. Exploring Baku with your own vehicle allows you to easily combine this ancient landmark with modern shopping districts or a sunset drive along the Absheron coast.
